With society and political pressure to increase our usage of renewable energy, wind, solar, hydro, wave, tidal and biofuels will play an increasingly important role into the future.
Aided by State and Commonwealth Government initiatives and incentives, solar energy is rapidly expanding into households and businesses for own use (with any excess rewarded via various State and Territory ‘feed-in tariff’ schemes) as well as commercial ventures designed to generate revenue from ‘feed-in tariff’ schemes.
The target markets are developers, manufacturers, suppliers, contractors, owners (including self managed super funds seeking a passive investment) and financiers in the ‘solar’ space. Whilst the fastest growing sector in Australia is ‘solar’, don’t overlook other renewable energy pioneers and participants.
Whilst most household and business solar units can be insured as part of standard insurance arrangements, the larger commercial ventures require specialist insurance cover.
Most of these commercial ventures are referred to as ‘solar farms’ and are typically located in semi rural and rural settings, close to public power grids to allow converted solar power ‘feed-in’. The majority of the ‘solar farms’ established thus far are additional income producing assets located on acreage used for B&B, vineyards, orchards, grazing, etc. Typically these ‘solar farms’ generate from 10 kilowatts (approx. $100K+ investment) to 30+ kilowatts (approx. $300K+ investment). Larger scale investments of $10M+ are also underway or in the planning stages.
Solar Insure, with the support of SolarPro® and Lloyds, has structured a composite cover that combines (for new assets) transit, construction and commissioning and (for new and existing assets) operating all risks, including mechanical/electrical breakdown and loss of revenue cover.
